6 Different Garage Door Materials – How to Choose

6 Different Garage Door Material Types. How to choose? Featured Image

Making sure you have the right garage door for your home is vital to keeping your garage safe from the outside world. Whether you face heavy snow, high heat, or high-speed winds, your garage door needs to be able to weather everything thrown at it. Different garage door materials are suited to different environments. Let’s look at the most common garage door materials and see where they are best suited.

STEEL GARAGE DOORS

Let’s start with Invicta’s garage door material: steel! Invicta deals exclusively in steel doors.

A favorite among homeowners for affordability, cost and high durability, steel garage doors don’t require much maintenance and last for years. They are also highly customizable and can be painted to match your home or mimic other materials, such as woodtones.

Steel doors are also extremely popular due to their usability in almost any climate. While they are uniquely suited to colder environments where the garage is used as a workspace, proper insulation helps to ensure that your garage stays at the temperature you need it to be.

Invicta Door deals exclusively with steel stamped doors. We offer multiple colors and wood tone options. Check them out Here.

WOOD GARAGE DOORS

When it comes to garage door materials, wood is a classic choice.

With its natural beauty and classic appearance, as well as a myriad of high-quality panel designs, solid wood garage doors are guaranteed to boost your garage’s curb appeal. With excellent insulating properties, wood doors hold up very well in colder climates.

Unfortunately, the nature of solid wood garage doors carries its share of drawbacks. Wooden garage doors are very high maintenance by nature. Wooden doors face rotting, warping, denting, scratching, and cracking when faced with extreme temperatures and high humidity.

ALUMINUM GARAGE DOORS

Although aluminum doors are typically more expensive than steel doors, their low maintenance requirements, make them extremely appealing. They can also be customized with different paints and finishes to best match your home.

Aluminum Material Garage Door Example

Unlike steel doors, however, aluminum isn’t a material suitable for every environment. With aluminum being a poor insulator, easier to dent than steel, and oftentimes not wind-rated, they do not hold up well in high-wind environments. Additionally, aluminum is very sensitive to high temperatures, so this door is not recommended for anyone living in areas afflicted with intense heat. The best places to have an aluminum garage door are more temperate environments.

WOOD COMPOSITE GARAGE DOORS

For the look and feel of a wood garage door without breaking the bank, while also enjoying the benefits of a steel door, you may be in the market for a wood composite door.

Wood composite garage doors are constructed out of recycled wood fibers as well as layers of fiberboard. They do require regular maintenance like solid wood doors though the actual maintenance required is less. Unlike solid wood doors, composite doors are resistant to rotting, warping, denting, and scratching. A wood composite door can be a durable, efficient insulator that can withstand extreme weather conditions.

VINYL GARAGE DOORS

For the family homeowner in need of something “kid-proof,” vinyl garage doors can be a good, economical, and basic choice.

Where the vinyl garage door lacks in customization (being that it is limited to its original color choice), it makes up for by being resistant to most damage such as corrosion, rot, scratches, and dents. It tends to be low maintenance and is suitable for most environments.

FIBERGLASS GARAGE DOORS

To end off our list, let’s talk about the fiberglass garage door!

Perfect for those who seek to make a fashionable statement with their garage door while protecting their home from the elements, fiberglass is framed in either aluminum or steel, and resistant to denting, scratching and corrosion. With a high degree of insulation, and high functionality in humid environments, fiberglass doors can be a stylish, reliable garage door choice. However, its, drawbacks are prominent.

Fiberglass doors are unsuited to harsh environments. The rigid, brittle nature of fiberglass cracks under high winds and can splinter in extreme temperatures. Should your fiberglass door crack or suffer damage, repairs are out of the question. The only way to fix a damaged, fiberglass garage door is to replace it. Should you live in an environment with moderate temperatures and low wind though, a fiberglass door can be a good choice.
